Grade Level: 4th


Welcome my fabulous ladies and gentlemen!! Are you ready to continue our jorney with shapes?



Introduction:
Who likes to do puzzles? How about ones that require a lot of logic? Hopefully the answer is "YES!" becasue the  following exercises will require just that!
To continue our learning about polygons you will explore the ancient Chinese puzzle called tangrams. A tangram is a puzzle with 5 triangles, one square, and one parallelogram. Follow this webquest and expand your horizons and your knowldge.


Task:
Throuh the  following exercieses you will learn some of the history of tangrams, experiment with online tangrams, and create your very own set of tangrams.



Prior to beginning the webquest print the Tangram Webquest Answer Sheet.

Process:

                    1. Read the passage about the history of tangrams and answer the questions on the answer sheet. 

                                Qusetions:
                                        - Is it known when tangrams were created?
                       
                                        - Tangrams were originally considered a game for who?
           
                                        - The origin of the name "tangram" is not known. However, what is one belief from where the name                                                came from?

                                        - According to the passage, how do you play?


                     2.  Go to the following website and attempt to solve a few of the problems and then answer the following question.                                            Click Here.

                                    Questions:
                                          - Do you like tangrams? Why or Why not?
                                           
                                          - Which puzzles did you try to solve?

                                          - Are they easy to solve? Why or Why not?
           
                                          - How are tangrams similar to the shapes you have been studying?


                     3. Follow the directions on the website and create your own set of tangrams and then answer following question.                                               Click Here.
                       
                                You need: a piece of paper, scissors, and a ruler


                                With your set of tangrams try to make the following:

                                        - A square using all seven tangrams pieces
                                        - A parallelogram using all seven tangram pieces
                                        - A hexagon using all seven tangram pieces



Evaluation: Hand in your answer sheet when you arrive to class. Also bring the tangrams you created. You will be evaluated on the following:

  • Did you complete the webquest?
  • Did you answer all the questions on the "Tangram Webquest Answer Sheet"?
  • Did you put effort into the questions?   
  • Did you bring the tangrams you created to class?
  • Did you explain or justify you answers when asked?
