Book: Kessler, Leonard. That’s not Santa! (1981). Scholastic Inc.
Summary of Book:
Santa gets ready for his trip to drop off toys only to find that his signature red suit is missing. He tries to substitute it but he can’t find anything that works until Mrs. Claus tries to help him.
Culture: American
Rationale:
Students will come to see that Santa’s suit is a signature part in the ambiance of Christmas.
Objective:
Students will see that certain images are engrained in our culture.
Materials:
Book- That’s not Santa!
Index cards with vocabulary words
Paper with person outline
Crayons

Motivation:
1. Warm up and review
a. We will review sight words as well as words associated with Christmas
2. Introduce New Vocabulary
a. Word Choice:
i. Sleigh Present
Idea Ho, Ho, Ho
Suit Cold
b. Word presentation:
I will write the words on the board and discuss their meanings.
c. Recognition:
i. I will say the word and then pick a student to repeat after me. They would then pick another student, and the new student picks another etc….
d. Analysis
i. Students will try to pick out vowel sounds in each word. We will also discuss the fact that some words can have two different meanings.
e. Automaticity
i. We will keep reciting the new words until each student can say them without coaching.
f. Phrase presentation:
Santa’s sleigh is filled with toys.
“Have you seen my red suit?”
“Wait. I have an idea.”
“You will catch a cold.”
“Santa, I want you to open your Christmas present right now.”
“Ho, Ho, Ho. I’m going with you.”
g. Students will pair off and work together to draw a picture of what they phrase to mean. They will then share their work with the class.
3. Prepare to Read:
a. Looking at the cover:
i. What animals do you see? What are they preparing for? Why do you think they have confused looks on their faces?
4. Read:
a. Students will read parts of the book out loud and then read silently after we reach the part where Mrs. Claus finds Santa in his red long johns.
RT- What is Santa preparing for? Why is he trying on all different costumes?
TS- What happened to his red suit? Why can’t he go out in a different one?
OO- Where would you look for your missing red suit? What suits could you wear to substitute for your missing red suit?
5. Skill Instruction:
a. We will work with suffixes –ed, -ing, and –s
i. Filled, sleeping, looks, says, comes, getting
b. Students will learn how to make verbs present and past tense.
c. Students will play concentration to match up root words with present or past tense of each skill word.
6. Enrichment:
a. Students will be able to take outline of a person and draw a suit for him.
7. READ READ READ:
a. We will read other Christmas stories.
