Mass Media Law
The internet has become the dominant way of getting information, rather than books and other resources. It's not just information though. Pictures, art work, songs, etc can all be found on the internet for anyone to see. With it being so easy to get this information some people might think that can just use it as they please. This is not true. Even though it's on the internet most information is copyrighted. This means that the person who posted the information has rights over who uses it and how it's used. Anyone caught using this information without permission or in a way the person you posted the information does not approve of can be sued and heavily fined.
Before taking this class I had never really though about what I used from the internet and the repercussion that could come from it. For example when doing a project for school and needing a picture of something. I would just go onto Google image and take what I needed. Now I will think twice before taking images or anything else off the internet without looking for a copyright.
Birth of The Internet
I could not image living life without the internet or how it could have been for anyone who was in college before the birth of the internet. Anytime I have a project where I need to get information on a topic, the internet is the first place I go. When I need directions to a place I've never been to I use MapQuest. When I need to get a hold of a teacher or advisor I send them an email over the internet. Even when I'm bored, I go on the internet to some of my favorite sites such as facebook and game sites.
Even for someone like my parents who didn't grow up with the internet use it just as much as I do. They use to to keep in touch with friends and family. My dad and my little brothers like to play fantasy football and are always checking how their players are doing. My mom will look up recipes for certain dishes and will download her newest favorite song to put on her iPod. I honestly don't think my family or I could survive without the internet.
Adaptive and Assistive Technology
It's very important that people with disabilities are able to access the same information anyone else could. For example, if a college student were blind they would still be expected to do the same work as the other students who weren't. Although this student would have a hard time getting information off of a computer. Now that there are computers that can read out loud people with disabilities who normally would not be able to use a computer. There are also many other times of advancements that have helped people with disabilities.
Podcasting and Aggregators
Podcasting was created in 2005 and has changed the world as we know it. Now struggling artists who want to be discovered can put their music out in a podcast with better luck of being discovered and turned famous. Not only can podcasting get you a record deal but can be used as a teaching tool. Now a days teachers even put lectures on podcasts for students. I don't know a whole lot about podcasts now but in years to come I hope to understand them better and to be able to use them for teaching purposes.
