Webquest- Reduce, Reuse and Recycle

Time Period- one or two 30-40 minutes lessons

Class: 4th or 5th Grade

Materials:

computer for each student

worksheet for students

Technology Standards:

1. Creativity and Innovation

Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.

d.identify trends and forecast possibilities.

New York State Learning Standards:

ELA Standard 1:

Listening and Reading

Listening and reading to acquire information and understanding involves collecting data, facts, and ideas; discovering relationships, concepts, and generalizations; and using knowledge from oral, written, and electronic sources.

Performance Indicator ELA1.E.LR1A: Students gather and interpret information from children's reference books, magazines, textbooks, electronic bulletin boards, audio and media presentations, oral interviews, and from such forms as charts, graphs, maps and diagrams.

Science Standard MST4:

Science Students will understand and apply scientific concepts, principles, and theories pertaining to the physical setting and living environment and recognize the historical development of ideas in science. The Living Environment Key Idea MST4.alt.LE6: Human decisions and activities have had a profound impact on the physical and living environment

Anticipatory Set:

Explain to students that since we have been talking about the 3 R's we will be exploring Recycle City to learn more about how to recycle.

Objectives:

The students will be able to verbally explain that some materials can be recycled with 90% accuracy, and give two examples.

The students will discuss ways they can decrease the amount of garbage they create.

Lesson:

Provide information (1-10):

1.Talk to the class about

2.Instruct the class to log on to their computers.

3.Have the students go to SUNY Plattsburgh’s website.

4.Have the students click on the student link near the top of the page.

5.Have the students look at the left column under “resources” and click on “Student Webpages”

6.Have the students scroll down and click on my name Lindsey Levesque.

7.Have the students right click on the Webquest link.

8.Have the students open the link on the webquest page in a new window.

Have the students go back to the webquest page to right click on the Printer Friendly Version of questions and open in a new window.

Have the students print the worksheet.

9. All of the students will arrive at the Recycle City website, and click on “First Visit? Click Here”

Provide Practice

10.Read about Recycle city as a class, and then pass out the question sheet.

11.The students can explore Recycle City and work on the worksheet. Explain to the students that they can click on the buildings in Recycle city to learn more about them. They can also go back to the main map by click “Recycle City Main Map” or “return”

12.Walk around and monitor the student’s progress.

Review the activity and Check for understanding

Ask the students what they might be able to do in their own homes to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Ask the students to share one thing they learned in the webquest.

Assessment

Assessment for this lesson will be done through class discussion, and observing their work during the lesson.
