Philosophy of Special Education

My philosophy of special education might not come from personal experience in the teaching field,  rather from books that have  read, classes that I have taken, observations I have done, and theorists I have learned about.

Special Education to me  is a field with many opportunities around each turn and a chance to influence individuals with special needs in such a positive way. I want to be involved in Special Education because I love the idea of being able to help shape individuals who have special needs. I hope to be a memorable part of my future students lives and accomplish so many things in this field.

First and foremost, I want to be a role model. I am also hoping to become a teacher who opens the minds of children with special needs and makes them feel like they can accomplish whatever they put their mind to and just because they have learning and/or physical disabilities does not change that. I believe that the most important things that I have to offer to the profession is confidence, competence, passion, patience, and an open mind. What  the most important thing to me is being a role model and leader to these students. Special needs students need this even more than general education students because they have the added pressures of learning and/or physical disabilities. If I cannot be that, than I feel like students would not be getting the valuable and enjoyable experience that they deserve. Students have the right to expect the best from their teachers because we are the ones who shape and mold them the most.

As I continue to get closer to becoming a Special Education teacher my mind is always open to new ideas and advice that one day I can use in my own classroom. I have realized that if I want to motivate a students then I need to provide students with information and materials in ways that best fits their style of learning. If any of my students are not successful I need to look at them not as student failures but rather as teaching failures. If I need to use differentiated instruction, technology, adaptation, or an environment to help a student succeed then that is the way it will be. There is always another option to try it just takes time and patience and every student deserves just that.

I am so passionate about the field of special education because of the feeling that comes from being able to see these students smile after learning something. They have jumped the hurdles they never thought they could jump. It is always rewarding being able to see students succeed and know that I will have been a part of that and put all I have into them. Being able to be part of that process is what makes Special education the career and profession for me and I am ready for the challenges that any of my future students holds. I have a lot to learn in this field but I am confident that any student who passes through my doors will be receiving the best education possible
