Section 508

The enactment of section 508 is a great step forward for the disabled. The law now requires that the electronic information technology of federal agencies is accessible to the disabled, and that developing technologies are created with the idea of making technology accessible for the disabled.  Information technology covers a vast area of technology. Any technology that helps with information must also help the disabled in a similar fashion. There are some exemptions for military or back office technologies that don’t have to follow this standard.  Nonfederal agencies do not have to follow any of the regulations under section 508. For the specifics of the technology that must be accessible, please visit the web site http://www.section508.gov/index.cfm?FuseAction=Content&ID=3.

Web accessibility

The initiative that this site is taking on is making all website accessible for the disabled. It describes the importance of making websites accessible for disabled people. This site deals with all the disabilities such as speech, auditory, visual, physical, cognitive, and neurological. It is important that people with any of these disabilities are able to have a working use of a website. This site also provides the necessary information needed to make a website accessible for the people with disabilities.

Mass Media Law

The mass media law is for the main purpose of providing what type of information is protected by the copy right laws. It first discusses plagiarism. This of course seems to be the most obvious unprotected copy right law. Any ideas that are not from the owner of the information don’t stand up with copy right laws. With the development of technology, such as the printing press, plagiarism became a serious issue. The law provides the right of a copy righted work only to the person whom created the work. That person has the right to reproduce, distribute, performance, display, and preparation of derivative works. The copyright law is also very specific on what can’t be copyrighted. The copyright law has been around for a long time. It can be seen from the time of the early British government.  Another important part of the law is that the owner is allowed to have a complete monopoly over what he copyrighted.

About Trio at Suny Plattsburgh

Trio is a federally funded program at Sunny Plattsburgh located at the student support services room in the ACC. Its main mission is to help students complete a four-year college degree program.  To qualify for the service, one must be from a home where neither parent has a four year college degree, be from a home with a modest income, or be student with a disabling condition. It really helps students transition for either high school to college or as a transfer. They provide counseling for academics, self, career, and peer counseling.  Trio also provides the disability services of Braille, talking computer equipment, books on tape, tutors, extra time on tests, note takers, and special access routes.  The program also provides English, math, and reading courses for college credits that has a low enrollment and tutorial help.

After having a tour of the Trio program, I saw many things that I thought were great for the disabled. I really like the scanner that is used for the blind. It is used to scan text books, and uploads the scan on a computer program that reads the printed information for the student. This uploaded material can also be printed by using the Braille printer that is connected to the computer.  I was also shown the alarm clock that will create a strong enough vibration to wake a blind student up. There is also an instrument that when hooked up to the pone will make a lamp or light blink for blind students. The program also has many sorts of tape recorders for students to take with them to class. For math, trio has a talking calculator. To learn more about the services that Trio provides, feel free to visit at the ACC building at Suny Plattsburgh.

Broadcasting, Cable, the Internet, and Beyond

Technology has changed greatly over the years. Even the terminology is very different from the not so long ago past. One of the last best inventions was the internet. A big problem today is getting internet access to the majority of the populations. Only a small portion of the people in the world have access to the internet and many are trying to increase this amount. Many feel that the internet can solve many global issues such as poverty and crisis. Email was also another great addition to the internet. It allowed instant messages to be sent. The web has become a large part of everyday life for some people. They use it to send emails, shop, sell, learn, entertainment, news, and to socialize. There will be much more to come in the future.

Podcasting

Podcasting is a great new way to get videos to people. A podcast is a download of a video. What's great about podcasting is that one can download their podcast to another device and view the podcast. Many college students are downloading podcasts on their ipod and watch it on the go.
