When teaching, one must keep in mind the civic and moral responsibility one holds as an educator; teaching is one of very few career paths where one's impact is directly observable and larger than one's own life and immediate circle.
One is responsibile for encouraging curiosity, logical thought, artistic ability, empathy, and a sense of moral and social standing in one's students. Without this, education has no context or meaning besides route memorization.
As a science educator especially, I feel responsibile for instilling an appreciation for the natural world and its wonders in my students. Biology is one of the few subjects that can truly give a person themselves in a very visceral manner.

As I progress through my teaching career and learn more from the field and from my students, my philosophy will grow and develop.
