Native American Week Activities

Native American Week 2005
In 2005, students and their families helped prepare a traditional luncheon for staff and native students. Parents were asked to donate a traditional dish or their time to help prepare for the luncheon. A food donation request was submitted to the First American's IGA to receive ingredients for traditional hash. The students and I used the donated ingredients to cook the hash. A social dance, led by Mr. Roger Perkins of Akwesasne, was held for the 7th grade class; Native American students were asked to wear traditional dress. In addition, Mohawk language students recited an abbreviated version of the Thanksgiving Address during the morning announcements.

Native American Week 2006
For Native American Week 2006, I made several improvements to the activities for this event. Staff and family were asked to donate ingredients for two main traditional dishes. With these donated ingredients, the students and I prepared the two dishes for a sampling luncheon for ALL students and staff. The sampling luncheon was served during all lunch periods; non-native students enjoyed sampling these new dishes and there was even enough for seconds and thirds! For the social dance, the entire school (rather than just the 7th grade) was invited to attend. Five separate performances were held to keep the group size down. Finally, Mohawk language students recited the full version (rather than an abbreviated version) of the Thanksgiving Address over the course of the week.
