Idioms

Introduction:

Recently in our classroom we have been studying idioms. An idiom is a phrase or expression that has hidden meanings. The expressions do not exactly mean what they say. An example of one is:

Today I am going to take the bus to school.

The phrase sounds like the person is actually putting a school bus into their backpack and going to school. It really means that the person is going to get on the bus and go to school.

The book series Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish always uses idioms. Amelia Bedelia is a maid who works for two people. When the two people leave Amelia Bedelia in charge they always leave her a list of things to do.

Task:

After reading the Amelia Bedelia book in class I will have you get into groups of pairs or threes. I will then hand out a slip of paper to each group. On the slip of paper will be one idiom that we have discussed in class taken from the book. Each group will do the follow each step of the process.

Process

Each group will..

    1) plan out how to act out the idiom written on their slip of paper

    2) Choose one person to act it out and one person to take the picture

**If there is a group of three then the third person will be the recorder

    3) After the picture is taken the group will take the camera to the me and I will print it out

    4) When the group has the picture they will write down

                a) What idiom they had

                b) what they are doing in the picture

    5) After they have taken the picture they will go to the following website:

    Idiom explanations

Find your idiom and see what it really means!

    6) They will then present this to the class by first showing the picture and having the class guess what idiom they have done and then present their information with the class.

Evaluation

I will be looking to see if each group presents their idiom to the class in the correct way. I will be helping when needed while the groups are taking their pictures. I will be making sure that each group presents in a good manner their idiom with the correct information being given to the  class. When each group is presenting I will be making sure that the rest of the class is giving the group their full attention and participating when the group asks to do so.
