Teacher Input:

**Teacher will have examples of adjectives on the board before the lesson**

T- Wow, the sky today is very blue and clear. The clouds are fluffy and the sun is glowing! Can anyone think of a way to describe the weather today?

S- It is sunny out!

T- You are right, it is very sunny out. Do you know what ____________ just used, everyone? He used an adjective! An adjective is a word used to describe. What is an adjective?

S- A word used to describe things!

**Teacher puts up a poster with the definition of Adjective on the board**

T- That’s right! You are smart students today! So if I said, “The chalk board is dusty today,” Would I be using an adjective?

S- Yes!

T- Which word describes the chalkboard?

S- Dusy!

T- Great! Look at the board. Can anyone think of how all these words are similar?

S- They are all adjectives!

T- They are? Why are they adjectives?

S- Because they are all describing words!

T- Oh Yeah!! That’s right! I’m glad you remembered! Let’s take a look at them.

**The teacher will go over the adjectives with the class asking the class how they would use that word in a sentence**

T- Fluffy. How could you use fluffy?

S) The pillow is fluffy.

T- Good one! The pillow is fluffy. Which word is the adjective?

S- Fluffy!

T- And Why is it an adjective?

S- Because it describes the pillow

**Teacher hands out the Object description worksheet**

T- Good! Alright I am going to hand out five different paper bags. Your job is to feel what is inside the bag without looking and then write down two adjectives to describe the object. After you have felt what is inside the bag and written down an adjective pass the bag to the person next to you. After each person has had a chance to feel what is inside the bags we will share our adjectives to try and guess what are in the bags. What are we going to do, Cindy?

Cindy: We are going to feel what is inside a bag and write down an adjective then pass the bag to the next person. After we have felt what is inside of each of the five bags we will try and guess what they are using the adjectives.

T- right! Good Job! Does everyone understand what to do? If you understand raise helpful hands above your head. Good!

**Teacher goes around helping students who cannot think of a word to describe the object in the bags. After each child has written down the adjectives the class shares the adjectives and guesses what is in each bag**

T- Good Job, Everyone! How did using the adjectives help us?

S- The adjectives help us figure out what the object was.

T- Right! Adjectives help us think in our minds what the object looked like and then we could guess. If you used adjectives to describe your house then I could probably figure out what it looked like. For homework tonight you are going to do that. You will draw a picture of your house and then write five adjectives to describe it. What is your homework, Evan?

Evan- We have to draw a picture of our house and then write 5 adjectives describing it.

T- That is right!

** Teacher hands out a white piece of construction paper for students to do their picture on and Big Blue House worksheet**

Guided Practice:

·       The teacher will put up Adjectives on the board and ask students to give a sentence using the word. The teacher will then ask why it is an adjective.

·       Teacher will constantly review what an adjective is and why it is an adjective

·       Teacher will ask for any other adjectives that the students can think of

·       The teacher will hand out 5 paper bags with an object in each one.

·       Students will have to feel inside each bag and write down two adjectives for each item.

·       They will then pass the bag around until each person has felt five different objects.

·       Students will then share what their adjectives are. Students will then guess from the adjectives given what the object is.

·       The T/A will be writing down the adjectives on the board to go over after.

·       The teacher will discuss how the adjectives told what the objects were. Adjectives are helpful when speaking to people in order to describe something.

Independent Practice

·       Students will receive a sheet that has a paragraph on it.

·       Students will then circle all the adjectives

·       Students will then share with a partner which words they have circled

·       Students will take home a piece of construction paper and a Big Blue House worksheet

·       On the construction paper they will draw their house

·       On the worksheet they will write 5 adjectives describing their house

Student Evaluation

Closure:

T: Today, perky people, we have learned about adjectives. What are adjectives?

S: Words that describe other words

T: Very good! You have it! What are these descriptive words? (Teacher points to the words on the board)

S: Adjectives!

T: Very nice. You are beautiful learners!

Homework:

The TA will hand out the sheet of white construction paper and a the Big Blue House worksheet. The assignment is to draw a detailed picture of the house they live in. This can include the yard, garage, and any cars. After they have drawn and colored the picture they have to think of 5 sentences that include adjectives describing the house.

The teacher goes over the assignment with the class and gives a couple adjectives as examples that describe his/her house. The students know that the completed assignment is to be due the next day and be put in the IN box.
