Web Quest
Let's Learn About the Oceans!
Introduction:
This web quest is similar to the lesson plan: Introduction to the Oceans, found in my lesson plans. This web quest is another way for students to meet the objectives stated in the lesson plan on their own. The purpose of this web quest is for students to learn more about geography and facts about the oceans. The lesson plan above is suited for grades 1-2, while this web quest is appropriate for grades 5-6. The reason for this is the content of the websites in the web quest. Some of the reading involved in the websites may be difficult for young readers; however, this web quest can be modified to suite grades 1-5. Teachers would simply need to find grade appropriate websites that are more suited to meet students reading levels. For younger readers choose websites that are easier to read, with more colorful pictures; you may also need to simplify the worksheets and questions.
Information:
The students' first task is to visit a tutorial website in which they will learn the names and locations of the oceans and continents by playing interactive map games. Their second task is to complete one of the two worksheets on labeling the oceans. The next task will be to open up Paint and draw a simple map of New York State and its closest ocean. Students will then be separated into four groups, and each group will research one ocean. Research will be guided by several questions. Students will explore the websites that are provided in this quest to explore facts about their oceans and find answers to the questions. Finally, each group will create a power point presentation to show the class what they discovered and learned about their oceans.
Objectives:
1.) Given appropriate instructions, the student will name and locate the four oceans on a map or globe with 100% accuracy.
2.) Given appropriate instruction, the student will list at least two facts about physical or geographical aspects of oceans.
Students... Welcome to your web quest!! Here is a little background information before you begin:
This web quest is to help you learn about and find information on the four major oceans. Even though most people agree there are four major oceans: the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Arctic, and the Indian, others say there is a fifth ocean, the Southern or Antarctic, which lies south of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, linking them together. While we think of these bodies of water as separate oceans, they are all connected and make up one global ocean.
Are you ready to learn and have fun while doing it? Here are your tasks...
1.) You will begin your quest by visiting the following website: World Geography Games, where you will practice your geography skills by playing interactive map games! This is a fun way to learn the names and locations of the oceans and the continents. After you do the quick tutorial, play the games to test your knowledge!
2.) Practice labeling the oceans on a map! Print and hand in one of the following worksheets found in Microsoft word:
3.) Time to draw and paint! Using the program: Paint, draw a simple outline of New York State and it's closest ocean. To do this you will need to go to Start, up to Programs, up to Accessories, and then to Paint. You will need to print out your pictures and hand them in. There are two websites below if you would like to see a picture of New York State or a picture of the United States.
4.) Time to get into groups! Count off by fours and get into 4 groups. Each group will be assigned an ocean to research (excluding the southern ocean). Your research will be guided by the questions below. Your group will answer the questions in the form of a power point presentation. You will need to save your work and present it to the class. To open power point you must go to Start, then up to programs, to Microsoft Office, then to Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003. Each question below should be answered on a separate slide. There are lists of websites below for you to explore and find answers to the questions.
Answer the following questions:
1.) Where is the ocean located? (You may refer to the worksheets, and websites above or below to answer this question.)
2.) How big is the ocean in comparison to the other oceans?
3.) What kinds of animals are found in this ocean?
4.) Say a little bit about the weather/climate of this ocean.
5.) Name four things you might see in this ocean.
6.) List any other information you found interesting about this ocean.
Visit the following websites to answer the questions about your ocean:
