As a student and a teacher it is important to be careful not to make the mistake of using someone else's work without properly citing, in other words, plagiarizing.  In college all of my professors and all of my syllabuses stress the seriousness of plagiarism.  If a student is caught passing off someone else's work as their own, it is grounds to receive an F in the class as well as removal from the college. 

This article above goes into great detail about copyrights:  what may be copyrighted, nature of the copyrighted work, effect of copyright use on the market, factors to be considered in fair use, what applications apply when a defendant claims fair use, and copyright protection and infringement, to name a few.  I found this article lengthy and hard to read.  I would recommend it if you are interested in knowing more about copyrights and the laws that surround them. 

 

As a future educator, it is very important that I use this knowledge to help prevent my students from making the mistake of using other people's work and pictures without proper citation.  I have learned that even something as innocent as using a picture from the internet to use in a power point is violating the author's copyrights. So, as teachers we need to careful about what we are teaching are students on this topic.

 

 

 

 

This article gets very in-depth on the changes and advances that have taken place, and continue to take place in modern electronic media.  This is a good, detailed article, if you are interested in knowing more about how computers and the World Wide Web became what they are today, which companies paved the road, and which companies are making the big bucks off internet usage.

This article gives you an idea of how fast technology has boomed and how certain forms of information and communication become obsolete.  When I was in school, we rarely used computers, our source of information came from books and card catalogs.  Students today, have a vast array of knowledge at their fingertips... all they have to do is log on.  Educators and parents need to be careful about this power, because some of the things that children see or find online are not appropriate, and are things we certainly do not want them to be learning. 

 

 

As a teacher, it will be useful to read up on new technologies available to use with students.  This short article explains what a podcast is, and step-by-step instructions on recording, editing, and publishing podcasts.  This article does not explain how to use this technology in the classroom, and if you are someone like me, who is basically computer illiterate, then don’t bother reading this article because it is hard to understand if you are not very savvy.  If you have a little “know-how”, then this article might help you understand how to distribute audio and music programming inexpensively over the internet.  So, if you are just beginning to understand the many advances in technology, as I am, then it would be more beneficial to take some sort of technology for the classroom training or perhaps attend a seminar relating to such, for more hands on experience with how to use these sorts of technologies in the classroom.  If you want to know more about what is available

Assistive and adaptive technologies are extremely important and useful for students with disabilities to use in the classroom.  These allow for students to gain and develop their independence, as well as promote them with the opportunity to participate fully in classroom activities.  I have had first hand experience in the classroom working with a student who is visually impaired and legally blind.  The adaptive technology he was able to access in the classroom allowed for him to participate in all of our activities and reading groups; without these technologies, he would not have been able to do the work on his own, which would result in an increase in his overall dependency on others. 

Educators within the classroom need to be aware of where student's needs lie and make arrangements for assistive and adaptive technology to be in place for those students to use.  There is a wide range of technologies available and advances are continuous.  It is wonderful how much is available for students with disabilities to use now.  Students are now able to complete tasks on their own with these tools which surely boosts their independence and confidence, and allows them to be more successful in school and in their lives overall.
