Introduction:

 

            Welcome to the year 1775! This is a time when the Founding Fathers of the United States decided to lead the United States to freedom from England. I hope you enjoy reading and answering questions on one of our Founding Fathers, Benjamin Franklin.

 

Task:

            You have been asked to read and answer questions on Benjamin Franklin. You will use a database to find the article about Benjamin Franklin. The author of the article is Mark Skousen, Benjamin Franklin’s 8th generation grandson. Skousen put together this article after he went through Franklin’s journal and personal papers.

 

Process:

            You may work on this activity with a neighbor, in groups of two. Write the answers to the questions on a piece of paper in your notebook, which you’ll hand in when you’re done. Here is the process you need to follow to find this article:

  1. What animal did Franklin think was very suitable to represent America? Why?
  1. What was the quote that was associated with that animal?
  1. While working to defend the country, how many hours did Franklin work a day?
  1. Who was the author of the pamphlet that made a case for independence?
  1. What was this pamphlet called?
  1. Why did Franklin feel that he was over whelmed with work?
  1. Why did Franklin and two other delegates from Congress go to Canada?
  1. Who would’ve been hard to properly discipline if Congress didn’t pay them regularly?
  1. What was Franklin asked to assist in preparing in June, 1775?
  1. Who deserted Franklin? Why did he desert Franklin?
  1. Whose army was in possession of New York, but lost it in 1776?  To whom did he leave it?
  1. Who appointed Franklin and two others as commissioners to go to France?
  1. What did they go there to discuss with France and why?
  1. How did Franklin encourage others to support the cause of liberty?
  1. Franklin believed that we suffered great during the war, but what did he think would repair our nation?
  1. Finally, after answering these questions, what is your opinion of Benjamin Franklin, and all he did to help lead our nation to freedom during the Revolutionary War?

Evaluation:
