 Philosophy of Education

Education serves as our foundation for life. How much education a child receives, and the quality of that education increases his or her quality of life. The education and services a child receives at school will help mold the child into a mature adult. Students who graduate from school gain a sense of pride from seeing what hard work does. This helps students strive for the best in life, to become a better person, and to help contribute to society.

While in my class, students will appreciate the education they will receive. I will have a quality learning environment and curriculum everyday for my students. My students will understand the importance and purpose of an education. When students know the importance and purpose of an education, they are more likely to work towards being an important member of society.

If I overheard my students talking about my teaching and I, they would be saying something like “Mr. Breeyear, he is an excellent teacher. He is fair, honest, consistent, kind, and helpful no matter what the situation is.” When I hear my students talking this way, I will keep teaching the way I had been. Students will be happy about being in my classroom because of the learning experience and environment I will create for them. I will enrich the lives of children on an everyday basis for as long as I teach. There will be nothing better than watching a student leaving school, feeling confident and happy that he or she went to school that day.

One teacher that affected me in this way is my fifth grade teacher. He’s an excellent man and former students of his always give him the greatest compliments. I one day, will be a teacher of this caliber. I believe this is the role of the teacher in education; to enrich the lives of students by providing them with an education through a quality curriculum and classroom environment.

I will also contribute to the community as an educator by doing anything I have to, to provide my students with a quality education, and becoming a person who society looks up to and trusts. Educators are professionals, and as professionals, educators should provide services for children to enable them to become a member of society that is trustworthy, honest, and caring of other individuals. I will have these qualities as an educator, and parents will be content with their child being in my classroom.

Parents will also be a part of my classroom. By frequently communicating with parents about the classroom and treating them with respect, they will be my partners in providing their children-my students, with a quality education. This will help me become a better teacher by getting feedback about their children. It is important that teachers and parents communicate because we both want the best for every student.

I believe having an effective discipline system is a key component of establishing a quality environment for myself to teach, and for my students to learn. While implementing my discipline system, I will be positive, respectful, adapting and tentative to students needs, consistent, and proactive. I will also create win-win procedures for myself and the students and give students choices about their consequences. Establishing these qualities in an effective discipline system will increase the quality of a student’s education experience by giving them a sense of power and making them feel that they are an important member of the class. Feeling this way will help raise their self esteem and dignity.

Another key component of establishing a quality environment for myself to teach, and for my students to learn will be my assessment. Assessment is an important part of education because it reflects how a student has grasped the content. I believe every student learns differently from his classmates, so it is important to implement different ways of assessing students. For example, some students don’t perform well on tests because of test anxiety, but may able to explain the content to the teacher when asked a question. These students should be given testing accommodations, or be assessed in other ways so they will accomplish their goals and feel confident in their education.

Also, different ways of assessment will keep students from feeling the class is boring or monotonous. Students do no like being assessed by just test and quizzes, although they are important in the classroom. Students like being assessed on projects and other creative activities implemented in the lessons by the teacher. This is why I will use as many differing assessments as I possibly can.

I will motivate students to obtain the best education they can receive and to become the best people they can be. I will motivate students by explaining to them that receiving an education opens up many doors of opportunity for their lives. Children can discover what they want to do with the rest of their lives because of a simple science or social student lesson. I will also motivate students by giving them appropriate incentives. For example, if all my students were to pass a unit test, the class could choose between a pizza party for lunch one day, or a free homework pass for an upcoming assignment. It’s important to motivate students because many need that motivation to obtain an education. Students may feel that they aren’t good students, but through constant motivation to receive an education and to become a well-rounded contributor to society, students will gain a high self-esteem and feel very dignified when they realize what hard work and persistence can do.

As an educator, I believe inclusion is an important ingredient in a child’s education experience. Through inclusion, students will obtain knowledge of how everyone is different in many ways, and that is it ok to be different. In my classroom, students will have respect for every single one of his or her classmates. Young children, who develop this quality early, will be willing help others in need and become respectful citizens of their community.

I believe teachers, as professionals, should be people that the society looks up to and trusts. Teachers should be positive, respectful, adapting and tentative to students’ needs, consistent, and proactive while teaching their students. Education serves as a foundation for our lives; Educators should become the best person possible, in order to educate and help prepare children to become members of society.
