Philosophy Of Teaching

When I was a child I was held responsible as an older sister to help take care of my younger autistic brother.  When I was a young girl I always tried to take care of my brother by helping him around the house and with teaching him basic skills.  I knew right away that my life was different than most of the girls my age.  I can always remember wanting to be a teacher because I wanted to help more children with mental and physical disabilities like my brother. I was inspired by how smart my brother was and how he could complete difficult tasks such as hooking up a DVD player to a TV. or using a remote control at a very young age.  Although he was unable to communicate, I knew that he was a special boy with many talents.  Even though growing up with an autistic brother was struggling at times, I always knew that I was a special person that was gifted to have such a kind, smart, and healthy brother.  It is because of my experiences with him that inspire me to want to be a teacher.

I found that growing up in a small town had given me many opportunities to succeed.  I attended a small school where most of the teachers in the school knew my first and last name.  Every teacher I have ever had has helped me achieve my short and long term goals.  I can remember the days when I was in elementary school and I would invite my friends over to play “teacher.”  I would use my blackboard to write down the activities, lessons and homework assignments.  I truly enjoyed helping all of my friends with their homework and giving them teacher advice.  I still do this today with all of my friends that need help. I love to help people and if I were to become a teacher I would be able to help students every day.

I would like my students to have the same passion that I have towards teaching or helping others.  We all find that sometimes we need the assistance from others in order to learn something new.  I would like my students to find a passion in something that they are interested in and try and work with it.  I want them to find a passion in learning that is beyond the classroom experience.  I would like to share my experiences of volunteering and helping children with disabilities because I think it’s important for every child to understand how much of a difference we can actually make to the community.

I would like to steer away from the textbook and bring in a set of new hands on experiences that the students can learn and interact from. I picture my classroom as being a positive environment where students can be engaged and motivated to come to class every day.  I hope to educate my students enough for them to see that they will have many opportunities for a bigger and brighter future.
