Broadcasting, Cable, the Internet and Beyond-

After reading this article, I feel that my views on the internet have changed because of what the author said about different internet servers.  I have always thought that internet servers such as AOL, Prodigy, and Compurserve were popular among most people.  I had no idea that the growth of the internet has challenged this internet server to retain their current customer’s status.  The author made a few points about which programs and internet servers are better to use and this is something that I had never looked into before.

I feel that my online habits have not changed and that I am the typical American that uses Internet Explorer, AOL instant messenger, email, online radio, etc.  Although this is what everyone does during there free time, I feel that this something that I will also do during my down time as well.  I learned that the first informational based services that were available to the public were started in Europe with the use of TV signals for the phone systems.  I have very little knowledge on how the computer was first made or where it had originated from.  I feel that I have gained some history about different types of technologies that I had never known before.

I am concerned that the Internet will take over the lives of Americans and that we will no longer need to rely on radios, televisions, or DVD players.  I also feel that we will become too dependent on the use of the computers that we will forget how to complete simple tasks manually such as completing a math problem on paper.  I’m worried that we will be glued to the computer and that we will forget to find other ways of having fun.  I believe this might be a disadvantage for children because as of now they are glued to the computer because of the games that are advertised on TV.

I feel that “new concepts in coordinating marketing and programming will develop rapidly in the next few years,” and that the internet will be the only way that advertising reaches out to the public. Another advantage of the growth of the internet is that their will be more job opportunities for those that are qualified in art publishing, computer programming, marketing, etc.  A disadvantage of the new advances in technology may be that people will start becoming more dependent on watching online shows and downloading/listening to music rather than listening to the radio.  I would like the internet to become faster than it is today and have better images that people can download from Google.  I think that the internet should provide more options as far as programs that people can choose from that will fit their individual needs.

  Mass Media Law-

I was shocked to find out the consequences of writers who plagiarize other peoples work. I knew that writers who were engaged in plagiarism would be fired from their jobs but I was unfamiliar with the fact that these cases were usually resolved outside of the legal system.  I was also surprised when I read that the writer may lose the books they have written or future ones.  I feel that copyright laws are overlooked by people who burn DVDs, CDs, and other things that are electronically based.  As Americans we are finding that it’s easy to download or burn DVDs because internet sites are providing us with the programs that we need to make copies of our favorite DVDs or music CDs.  I was familiar with this law in school but most people around me overlooked this as not being a main issue in society.  I didn’t realize until I read this article the consequences for copying something that is someone else’s work.  I was unfamiliar with the word fair use until I read the article and found that it is linked with the copyright laws as far as what can and cannot be copied.  I find that my online habits have not changed and that most Americans will not change their habits.

I find that P2P file sharing is something that is affecting most Americans.  I know that when Napster was introduced I was a part of that generation of downloading music when it first came out.  I started becoming addicted to downloading music until I realized the consequences of this experience.  I do wonder though why websites are still creating new ways to download music such as "lime wire" if they don’t want people to download music at all.  I feel that if the government doesn’t want people to download illegal music that they should do a better job of catching all of these other companies such as lime wire and try and stop them.

Podcasting & Aggregators

I feel that podcasting is a great new way for young people to listen to music they enjoy on their own computers.  This is a great way to share music with other people.  It seems that aggregators are a great way to store news pages and tracks web pages, blogs, weather, email and much more.  I find podcasting to be something I am interested in because I love music and everything iPods have to offer.  I cant go a single day without listening to music either from my iPod, windows media player on my laptop, or just by listening to the radio.  When I was living in the dorms, I enjoyed sharing music through iTunes with everyone that was living in my building.  I found that there are educational values to podcasting and I could see my students using my website as a reference in understanding what it is.

I view this technology as something that is useful and I wish that I had all of these new technological advances when I was in elementary and in junior high school.  I feel that I could have benefited from this new technology as a young child.  I believe that this will affect the media and how music is being distributed among Americans.  I feel that podcasts will become a new and unfamiliar idea to them but once they understand what it is they will immediately become interested in learning more.  I find that with all of these technological advances that podcasting is here to stay but they will be adding and making more changes to it in the future.  I can see lots of people ranging from the young to the old using both podcasts and aggregators.

Adaptive & Assistive Technology

I had no idea until I read that that in section 508 that the government makes it accessible for students with disabilities to operate technology.  I think that this is a great way to encourage and include people like my brother to use the computer to learn basic skills.  The students with disabilities can learn a lot from technology such as computers because it will help them form academic and organizational skills.  This will also help them gain a better idea of where there strengths and weaknesses are.

I feel that its important for industries to support these programs because people with disabilities have accommodations and needs that will help them become a better worker.   There are some people who have a disability that are better with computers than others and that is their strength.  It’s important that we find these strengths and use them in the workplace.  This will give them confidence that they will succeed in their work atmosphere.  The trip over to the Student Support Services gave me a better idea of how they accommodate different people with various disabilities.  The Student Support Services staff  seemed extremely kind and willing to help anyone with their needs.  Now that I have heard and seen what technology can do for people with disabilities, I am starting to lean to the positive side of how technology can impact our lives.
