EDU 330-Exploring Educational Issues through Writing: Uses analysis of educational theory, scholarly articles, and other types of writing in the discipline to make explicit various rhetorical expectations for writing in the field. Emphasizes writing to learn, celebrates writing across the disciplines and helps candidates improve their prose through analysis, peer editing, and myriad writing exercises.
EDU391- Science for the Elementary School Teacher: The New York State syllabus for teaching science in the elementary school and methods for implementation at the local-school level. Planning, program management, content assessment and evaluation, and instructional materials are considered.
EDU357- Use of Media in Education- Instructional media basic competency: hardware and software proficiency; technology classroom management techniques; use of the Internet in the classroom; software and website evaluation; review of educational technology literature; and technology-integrated lesson planning.
EDS410-Foundations of Special Education- Overview of the field of special education, past and present. Emphasis on the characteristics and needs of children and youth with exceptionalities. Study of significant litigation and legislation. Delineation of program options for students and teaching roles for special educators. Examination of the theoretical bases for educational practice. Exploration of the socio-cultural aspects of mild disabilities.
EDS461-Applied Behavior Management- Study of management of problem behavior in the classroom. Effects of teacher behavior and teacher attitudes on handicapped students' behavior. Control techniques, case analysis, behavior modification and interviewing techniques.
EDM453- Introduction to Teaching/Learning Elementary Mathematics- Curriculum, philosophies of teaching and learning, program aims and concepts, instructional strategies and aids, evaluation procedures and trends.
EDR318- Basic Reading Instruction- Understanding theories of reading development, individual differences, the nature of reading difficulties, and principles of assessment. Instruction of word identification; phonemic awareness; letter-sound correspondence; vocabulary, comprehension, and study strategies; and assessment of student performance and progress. Communicating information about literacy, developing curricula, participating in professional activities.
EDR315- Teaching Culturally Responsive Language Arts-Affirm, respect and value cultural, linguistic and ethnic diversity through study of the interrelation of language and literacy development. Respond to increasing diversity in classrooms through more conscious awareness and use of multiple, integrated, practical, problem-solving strategies adapted to the specific needs and interests of children in all areas of the language arts: reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing visually. Attend to literature that reflects cultural, linguistic and ethnic diversity; introduce children to picture books, poetry and nonfiction written by and about people of all races and cultural backgrounds.
EDS481- Assessment in Special Education- Administration, scoring and interpretation of standardized educational assessment instruments. Use of assessment data to identify and place students with disabilities, and to develop Individualized Education Programs.
EDS482- Curricular Practices in Special Education- Competencies in curricular programming for the learners with mild/moderate disabilities in the development, implementation and evaluation of instructional plans. The use of specific techniques and commercial programs as these apply to self-contained, resource and consultative teaching programs at both elementary and secondary levels.
EDU359- Integrating Technology into Teaching- The incorporation of technological tools with pedagogical skills. Adaptive and/or assistive technologies will be explored. Lesson plans that utilize technology to support instruction will be developed and implemented. Videos of implemented lessons will facilitate student self-evaluation. Web-based showcase portfolios will be developed in order to illustrate student learning and accomplishment in their overall degree program.
EDS 429 - Family/Interdisciplinary Collaboration- Provides candidates with theory, general principles, and procedures for fostering collaborative partnerships among teachers, families, professionals, students, and other stakeholders that lead to outcomes of individual and mutual empowerment.
EDS 483 - Special Education Practicum - Teaching practicum stressing assessing learner instructional needs, designing, delivering, and evaluating instruction for learners with disabilities in school environments.
EDR 524 - Teaching Reading/Content Area - Clarification of the relationships between general reading skills and special skills needed for efficiency and effectiveness in content area reading. Differentiation and individualization of instructional program, including reading skills and strategies in content areas.
EDR 507 - Res Methods in Lit Ed - A conceptual framework for educators in their roles as producers and consumers of research. The basic concepts and principles important to understanding research, especially in literacy education, will be introduced. The focus will be on sensitizing educators to caveats and ethical issues by developing abilities to frame, analyze, evaluate, and critique research. The participants will learn about the real world of research by designing a research study and will be introduced to the two fundamental research paradigms: quantitative and qualitative.
