Grade Level: 5th -6th
Title of Lesson: Ellis Island: Writing a persuasive letter
Time Allotment: 20 Minutes
Materials Needed: Bring in the sheet parts of a letter, also bring in a sheet with a letter heading.
NYSED Standard: Standard 1. 5 English Language Arts
Listening & Reading to acquire information and understanding involves collecting data, facts, and ideas; discovering relationships, concepts, and generalizations; and using knowledge from oral, written, and electronic sources.
· Make appropriate and effective use of strategies to construct meaning from print, such as prior knowledge about a subject, structural and context clues, and an understanding of letter-sound relationships to decode difficult words
Anticipatory Set: To introduce this lesson I will first teach the students how you write a letter and the different parts of a letter. I will also give an example of what a letter looks like.
Learning Activity:
The students will have to write a persuasive letter to someone that is already living in America and tell them why they want to join them in America. They will also have to tell them what kind of job they are looking for and what they have to offer. The students will then share their work with the rest of the class.
Questions:
1. Why do most Immigrants want to come to America?
2. What kinds of jobs do they take when they arrive in America?
3. Where do they settle when they first come?
Practice: The students will first make a sloppy copy of their letters, I will then have them pair up with a student and do peer editing.
Closure: When the students are done with their letters, they are going to take part in author’s chair. This is where the student gets the spotlight and reads what they have written. This allows students to take pride and ownership in their work.
Assessment: The students will be given a rubric which the teacher will base their grades they will receive on the letter. It will include neatness, sentence structure, and how well the students had answered the questions.
