Technology integrated Lesson

Grade Level: 5th to 6th Grade

Title of Lesson: “Technology through the years” (This Goes with the Web Quest)

Date and Time: Day one for 30 minutes

                           Day two for 30 minutes

 

Anticipatory set: I will begin my class by introducing a zipper. I will ask the students if they know what year the zipper was invented? When they reply I will say after going to the website you will not only be able to tell me the year but also who the inventor was.

Learning Activity:

Using a bar graph students will be able to see how, technology has improved from 1892-1954, when immigrants first landed on Ellis Island to when they closed the doors to Ellis Island.

Day 1:

The students will be going  to the computer lab  they will then go to the website: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/telephone/timeline/f_timeline.html

This website shows what year different inventions came out; they can then click on the invention and learn more about it. The students will copy the chart off of my web quest onto Microsoft word. Time periods are in one box and the other box is blank the students will then have to put 1’s in the box for each invention that came out. 1 = 1 invention.

Day 2:

The students will retrieve their data sheets and as a class we will make a bar graph using the following sit: http://nces.ed.gov/nceskids/index.aspThe students will follow the directions by going to the web quest and completing each task.The Students will be able to see the development of technology throughout the years on their graph.

Social Studies Standards:

NCSS Standard: Science, Technology & Society

Provide opportunity for learners to make judgments about how science and technology have transformed the physical world and human   society and our understanding of time, space, place, and human-environment interactions.

NYSED Standard: Standard 4.2

Economics requires the development and application of the skills needed to make informed well-reasoned decisions in daily and national life.

ISTE Standards:

5 Technology research tools: Students use technology to locate, evaluate, and collect information from a variety of sources. Students use technology tools to process data and report results. Students evaluate and select new information resources and technological innovations based on the appropriateness for specific tasks.

Questions: ( The Students will copy these questions on to Microsoft word)

1. What time period had the most inventions?

2. What time period had the least inventions?

3. How many time periods had five inventions come out?

4.  What creation might have helped immigrants who were unable to come to America because of a disease?

5. How many inventions came out in the 1900s?

Evaluation: The students will be graded on how well they answered the 5 questions, and if you followed the directions correctly to complete your graph.
