Work Experience

Prior to entering Plattsburgh State University for my undergraduate study, I worked at a Dream Builders Learning Center.  I worked there for 2 years.  For the first year I was the teachers aide in the infant room. For the remainder of my time at Dream Builders I floated around the center to where I was needed.  I worked in all classrooms' infant, toddler, and preschool.  I also cooked all the centers meals for two months while our cook was out on sick leave.  I loved my time spent at the center and I will never forget the wonderful learning experience. I had to leave the learning center to attend college otherwise I would still be there!

During my last semester of my undergraduate work I did an internship at Cumberland Head Elementary School.  I worked with the school's social worker and as an aide to a first grade teacher.  My internship lasted the entire semester and was 32 hours a week.  I learned tremendous amounts from both faculty members.  The first grade classroom was an inclusion room, so I learned about how important it is to have differentiated instruction.  All students learn at different abilities and with using different techniques.  The classroom was very challenging and I learned many behavioral methods throughout my experience.  The schools social worker taught me many ways to build relationships with students and I even sat in on some sessions.  I did behavior assessments and help facilitate a divorce group called banana splits. My internship made me realize how much I wanted to become an elementary teacher.

This semester, while in the MST program, I have been substitute teaching at two local school districts; Beekmantown School District and the Northeastern Clinton Central School District.  Both school districts have been a great learning experience.I have taught in all levels; elementary, middle school, and high school.  I have also taught all subjects.  Even though I am in the elementary program I thought teaching in all levels would be very beneficial; seeing how an entire school operates and how teachers collaborate is wonderful.

My field experience was also done this semester, as part of the MST program.  I worked at Chazy Central Rural School for three weeks. I observed a Kindergarten Classroom.  Danielle Rovers, was my Professional Development Educator (PDE), that I worked with.  I taught many lessons and fell in love with the school and the faculty.  This school reminds me of my elementary school, it is very small and close knit.  During my stay I taught single digit addition, I introduced the letter J, I assessed students reading, I created a bulletin board, and brought in a guessing jar; for the students to understand estimation.  Mrs. Rovers has a wonderful bunch of students and here are a few photos of the classroom and my experiences at Chazy Central Rural School.
